A walk down the meme-ory lane – Top 10 memes of 2018

2018 is already over! And while some of us are happy about it, some still can’t come in terms with the fact that it’s gone. But there is one thing to which we all agree on, unanimously  – the Internet in 2018 was a weird, wild place. There were constant arguments, drama, and snitch tagging. However, in between the horror and absurdity of the last 365 days, there were sprinklings of joy and goodness that made us laugh. It was a stressful year, but at least we had memes!

When it comes to memes, the internet keeps getting better with each passing year. From the CEO of the world’s largest social networking platform to the royal family members to the great Lebron James, even the most prominent names got meme’d out in 2018.
So, let’s take a walk down the meme-ory lane if you will, to take a look at some of the best memes of 2018:

1. If you don’t love me at ___
Well someone said it!
Social media geniuses turned a classic saying, into the perfect viral trend about growth and self-acceptance by giving it a new wholesome twist. “If you don’t love me at my worst then you don’t deserve me at my best.” with its multiple variations surely deserves the top spot in our list.

2.Elon Musk smokes weed
Yes, he hit that blunt.
Elon Musk smoked a blunt while being live on YouTube in an episode of The Joe Rogan Experience, and as expected, everyone got high with ‘Elon Musk smoking weed’ memes. Amidst Tesla’s crashing stock prices, and his other controversies, Elon Musk kept his cool with umm…some good stuff?

3.Change my mind
A lot of people did.
When a conservative podcaster set up his table encouraging people to change his mind about “male privilege,” the internet quickly got to work and turned him into a trending meme. It became a platform to share the diciest opinions, from pineapple on pizza to green lantern being the worst superhero movie.

4.American Chopper
The iconic duo is back!
American Chopper came back for a revival in 2018, prompting the people on the internet to bring back the iconic scene from the original show. The father-son duo became a meme for the hottest and spiciest fights.

5. Government Agents
Did you put a tape on your laptop camera yet?
The idea of an FBI agent constantly keeping surveillance took an odd, poignant form, as people started to make memes about these agents continuously monitoring them. There was something comforting about an all-seeing presence that was looking out for us as we went about our lonely online existences.

6.Tired Spongebob
Someone did a good job summing up 2018.
Nothing sums up the emotion of getting out of an awkward situation better like an out-of-breath Spongebob Squarepants. Be it introverts running away from conversations or the end-of-year exhaustion, this meme reflected the exact feeling.

7.Drakeposting
2018 was indeed Drake’s year.
This year we saw a lot of memes being over and over again from Drake’s old hit song Hotline Bling. The meme includes Drake’s dance moves and gestures that highlight two completely opposite situations, the other one being dumb in most cases. No wonder everyone lost their minds over it!

8.Is this a Pigeon?
Is it a meme? Or is it just life.
This one scene from the early ’90s anime, The Brave Fighter of Sun Fighbird, might be over two decades old, but internet users were quick to apply it to the misinterpreted situations of real-life.
From capitalism to even a small thing as parallel parking, this meme had a version for every confusing situation.

9.Thank You, Next
This one taught me to laugh.
Based on Ariana Grande’s hit single, ‘Thank you, Next’ spread like wildfire on the internet. Reason being the ease with which everyone could relate to the emotion. Let’s be honest, though we’ve all been affected by at least a million things in life, coming up with just three of them was relatively easy.

10.Distracted Boyfriend Meme
Let me just spoil what I have.
The 2018 meme list can’t be complete without the iconic Distracted Boyfriend meme. The emotion was just too relatable for everyone having a FOMO out there. Photographed by the Spanish photographer Antonio Guillem this image was the perfect way to depict different forms of infidelity.

                                                                         ****
There was something different about 2018’s meme landscape: people celebrated love, positivity and friendship in various ‘templates’. So in case, we missed your favourite meme, which we are kind of sure we did cos there are just so many to fit into one list, do post them in the comment section to share the happiness!
