Instagram initiated this by adding some colourful tools to highlight pride related content.
Instagram takes us back by #UntoldPride
Untold pride is inspired by the pride seen on instagram everyday. The hashtag can be used to share or learn about trans revolutionaries like Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, or to share your own #comingout story.
You can share using this hashtag to connect with the community or to show what the LGBTQ communnity means to you.
Instagram is also unveiling installations around the city depicting the lesser-known LGBTQ pioneers, movements, places to empower them.

As stated by Instagram,”No matter how you celebrate Pride, you can do it colorfully across Instagram. Together with GLAAD, we’ve identified prominent and popular hashtags – such as #lgbtq, #bornperfect, #equalitymatters, #accelerateacceptance, or #pride2019 – that the LGBTQ+ community uses to share and connect with each other. When you use these hashtags in Feed this month, they will be displayed in a rainbow gradient. New this Pride, when you use these hashtags in Stories, your story ring will turn rainbow while the photo or video is live for 24 hours.”

In addition to this, Instagram also updated gender options as “custom” such as “gender non-confirming” as opposed to the previous version specifying “Male”, “Female”, and “not specified”.

While most of these options are just simple aesthetics but Instagram’s gender listing option is significant, as it provides utility not only for pride month but also for the future. These options help to cater more users and bring a sense of belonging to the community. It empowers this community by creating this online atmosphere and encourage people to join relevant, supportive communities.
